What are we building

Zymergen is creating and enhancing the user interfaces to the data collection, workflow, and analytic components of our platform. These systems are used throughout our biofactory and are intended to be the common entry point for every system. We want our internal user base to have a consistent user experience, across the entire collection of systems.

What will you do

The frontend software engineers will work with a team which includes biologists and automation experts who are designing, building, operating, and continually upgrading an integrated, end-to-end system supporting the automation of DNA design and assembly, microbial testing, and data analysis. The software you create in this role will be visible to everyone in and around our factory.

Some of the projects you could work on are:

Tools to enable microbiologists to design and manage collections of new DNA constructs at a greater scale than previously employed in the wet lab environment.
A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that collects and organizes large volumes of raw and analytic data from a variety of sources and formats, and enables scientists to analyze this information in the context of the genetic designs.
Tools to orchestrate the high-throughput workflows that empower our scientists to construct and test new microbes at large scale.
Integrating our UI and workflow system with our automated robotic platforms

Which skills will you need

  • At least 3 years of professional user interface experience
  • BS in Computer Science or an equivalent technical degree
  • Strong design sense for UX / interaction / visual design
  • JavaScript expertise
  • Demonstrated ability to create NodeJS and Express applications

Founded in 2013 and based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Zymergen is a technology company unlocking the power of biology. We deliver better economics for products made from biology that are used across industries, bring new products to market faster, and develop novel products. Our proprietary platform uses robots and machine learning to engineer microbes faster, more predictably, and to a level of performance previously unattainable. These microbes, and the products they produce, have broad applications across industries such as chemicals and materials, agriculture, and healthcare. For more information visit www.zymergen.com.

A key element of our success is our ability to apply the latest in software tools, Big Data technology, and machine learning techniques to challenges in chemistry and manufacturing. Zymergen’s software engineering team plays a critical role in distinguishing our products and systems from those developed by our competitors.

Working at Zymergen offers software engineers exposure to a field that makes a difference in the lives of millions of people: low-cost, scalable chemical manufacturing touches everything from how airplanes are built to the frontiers of life-saving medicines. In addition to working at a fast-growing startup and a competitive salary package, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you are building a future for our world that was the realm of science fiction just ten years ago.
